Said the Signifyin' Monkey to the lion one day

«There's a great big elephant down the way

Goin' round talking, I’m sorry to say

About your mama in a scandalous way

The lion said, «Yeah?

Well I’ll fix him

I’ll tear that elephant limb from limb»

Then he shook the jungle with a might roar

Took off like a shot from a .44

He found the elephant where the tall grass grows

And said, «I come to punch you in your long nose»

The elephant looked at the lion in surprise

And said, «Boy, you better go pick on somebody your size»

The lion wouldn’t listen, he made a pass

The elephant slapped him down in the grass

The lion roared and sprung from the ground

And that’s when that elephant really went to town

I mean he whipped that lion for the rest of the day

And I still don’t see how the lion got away

But he dragged on off, more dead than alive

And that’s when that monkey started his signifyin' jive

The monkey looked down and said, «Ooh-wee!

What is this beat up mess I see?

Is that you, lion?

You big overgrown pussycat, don’t you roar

The monkey got to laughing and jumpind up and down

But his foot missed the limb and he plunged to the ground

The lion was on him with all four feet

Ground that monkey to hamburger meat

The monkey looked up with tears in his eyes

And said, «Please, Mister lion, I-I apologize

I meant no harm, please let me go

And I’ll tell you something you really need to know»

The lion stepped back to hear what he’d say

And that monkey scampered up a tree and got away

«What I wanna tell you,» the monkey hollered then

«Is if you fool with me, I’ll sic the elephant on you again»

The lion just shook his head and said, «You jive

If you and your monkey children want to keep alive

Up in them trees is where you better stay.»

And that’s where they are to this very day

Et dit : "Je viens te frapper dans ton long nez"

L'éléphant a regardé le lion avec surprise

Et j'ai dit : "Garçon, tu ferais mieux d'aller choisir quelqu'un de ta taille"

Le lion n'a pas écouté, il a fait une passe

L'éléphant l'a giflé dans l'herbe

Le lion rugit et jaillit du sol

Et c'est à ce moment-là que cet éléphant est vraiment allé en ville

Je veux dire qu'il a fouetté ce lion pour le reste de la journée

Et je ne vois toujours pas comment le lion s'est enfui

Mais il a traîné, plus mort que vif

Et c'est là que ce singe a commencé son jive signifiant

Le singe baissa les yeux et dit : « Ooh-wee !

Quel est ce gâchis battu que je vois ?

Tu es censé être le roi de la jungle, n'est-ce pas quelque chose ?

Le singe a commencé à rire et à sauter de haut en bas

Mais son pied a raté le membre et il a plongé au sol

Le lion était sur lui avec les quatre pattes

Hacher ce singe à la viande de hamburger

Le singe a levé les yeux avec des larmes dans les yeux

Et dit: "S'il vous plaît, monsieur le lion, je-je m'excuse

Je ne voulais pas de mal, s'il te plaît, laisse-moi partir

Et je vais vous dire quelque chose que vous devez vraiment savoir »

Et ce singe a grimpé dans un arbre et s'est enfui

"Ce que je veux te dire", cria alors le singe

"Est-ce que si tu t'amuses avec moi, je vais encore te refiler l'éléphant"

Le lion a juste secoué la tête et a dit: « Tu bouges

Si vous et vos enfants singes voulez vivre

C'est dans ces arbres que vous feriez mieux de rester. »

Et c'est là qu'ils en sont à ce jour
