I start thinking that I’ve got it made and I go out on the town

Then the check comes back in a couple of days marked «Insufficient funds»

I had a little gig at the Cosmic Carrot playin' the electric bass

Got my check at the end of the night, a big smile came over my face

My credit was good so I borrowed some bucks, stood everyone a couple of rounds

But that check was rubber and it bounced right back marked «Insufficient funds»

But there’s still people with lots of bread and then folks like you and me

But they’re driving big steaks and eating big cars, making money by the tonnes

So how come when I bust my ass, I get «Insufficient funds»?

J'ai eu un petit concert au Cosmic Carrot en jouant de la basse électrique

J'ai reçu mon chèque à la fin de la nuit, un grand sourire est venu sur mon visage

Mon crédit était bon alors j'ai emprunté quelques dollars, j'ai laissé tout le monde faire quelques tours

Mais ce chèque était en caoutchouc et il rebondit immédiatement avec la mention « Fonds insuffisants »

Je suis allé à la banque aujourd'hui pour retirer tout mon argent

Je pensais que j'aurais mes cinquante bucks - deux cinq, trois dizaines et un vingt

Les gens faisaient une longue, longue file d'attente et tout le monde a l'air abasourdi

Parce que le panneau sur la porte disait "La banque est fermée en raison de fonds insuffisants"

Maintenant, certaines personnes attribuent tous ces problèmes à une divinité

Mais il y a encore des gens avec beaucoup de pain et puis des gens comme vous et moi

Mais ils conduisent de gros steaks et mangent de grosses voitures, gagnant de l'argent par tonnes

Alors, comment se fait-il que lorsque je me casse le cul, j'obtienne des « fonds insuffisants » ?
