Growing Up - Ed Bruce

Second day of third grade, Three Oaks Elementary

She sat in the first row, I was all the way across the room

It might as well have been the far side of the moon

I had to get her attention, she wouldn’t look at me

I waited for the bell to ring, and when we went outside for recess

I put a cricket down the backside of her dress

Had to take a note home, Mama spanked my butt

Daddy hugged me, «Son, that’s part of growing up»

You live and learn to give and take

When to use your strength

And when you need a gentle touch

Sometimes it takes patience

Sometimes a greater store of love

You learn it growing up

Andy was my best friend, all the way through high school

We couldn’t wait for Friday night

We’d chip in change for gas in his car and roam

One night I was grounded so he went out on his own

Two o’clock in the morning, I’d just gotten to sleep

Mama took the call and woke me

«That was Andy’s Daddy on the phone»

Andy missed that hairpin curve on Levee Road

Andy loved to run hard, he never buckled up

Mama held me when I cried growing up

You live and learn to give and take

When to pray for strength

When understanding’s not enough

Look life in the eye

Even when the road gets rough

It’s not easy growing up

I can’t forget the day she called me home from work

The pains were getting closer

She said, «Hon, don’t panic, but it’s time to go»

We named him «Andy"for a friend I used to know

It hit me just this morning, I dropped him off at school

No great revelation

I bowed my head and thanked the Lord for all I’ve got

Little league and family picnics in the park

Both our folks are doing well, the circle’s filling out

I treasure every moment;

I’m still growing up

You live and learn to give and take

Always try to do your best

And hope that it’s enough

If you don’t lose the faith

You’ll always find the love

It’s all part of growing up

Deuxième jour de troisième année, Three Oaks Elementary

Elle s'est assise au premier rang, j'étais de l'autre côté de la pièce

Cela aurait aussi bien pu être de l'autre côté de la lune

Je devais attirer son attention, elle ne me regardait pas

J'ai attendu que la cloche sonne, et quand nous sommes sortis pour la récréation

J'ai mis un grillon à l'arrière de sa robe

J'ai dû ramener un mot à la maison, maman m'a donné une fessée

Papa m'a pris dans ses bras, "Fils, ça fait partie de grandir"

Quand utiliser votre force ?

Et quand vous avez besoin d'un contact doux

Parfois, il faut de la patience

Parfois une plus grande réserve d'amour

Tu l'apprends en grandissant

Andy était mon meilleur ami, tout au long du lycée

Nous ne pouvions pas attendre vendredi soir

Nous donnions de la monnaie pour l'essence dans sa voiture et nous errions

Une nuit, j'ai été puni alors il est sorti tout seul

Deux heures du matin, je venais juste de dormir

Maman a pris l'appel et m'a réveillé

"C'était le papa d'Andy au téléphone"

Andy a raté ce virage en épingle à cheveux sur Levee Road

Andy aimait courir dur, il n'a jamais bouclé sa ceinture

Maman m'a tenu quand j'ai pleuré en grandissant

Vous vivez et apprenez à donner et à recevoir

Quand prier pour avoir de la force ?

Quand comprendre ne suffit pas

Regardez la vie dans les yeux

Même quand la route devient difficile

Ce n'est pas facile de grandir

Je ne peux pas oublier le jour où elle m'a rappelé du travail

Les douleurs se rapprochaient

Elle a dit : "Chérie, ne panique pas, mais il est temps d'y aller"

Nous l'avons nommé "Andy" pour un ami que je connaissais

Ça m'a frappé ce matin, je l'ai déposé à l'école

Pas de grande révélation

J'ai incliné la tête et remercié le Seigneur pour tout ce que j'ai

Petite ligue et pique-niques familiaux dans le parc

Nos deux amis vont bien, le cercle se remplit

Je chéris chaque instant ;

je grandis encore

Vous vivez et apprenez à donner et à recevoir

Essayez toujours de faire de votre mieux

Et j'espère que c'est assez

Si vous ne perdez pas la foi

Tu trouveras toujours l'amour
