You know I get to thinking a lotta times about back when I was a boy

The old homeplace where I grew up of the days both good and bad

My overalls were hand-me-downs my shoes they were full of holes

I used to walk four miles to school every day through the rain the sleet and

the cold

But all he ever got was a badland farm and seven hungry mouths to feed

And I always felt that maybe our home was blessed

And there was Bob and then Tommy and at last was Dan

By then dad’s hair was turning white and I had to be my mama’s little man

But it seemed that as daddy’s back grew weak

My mother’s faith just grew that much strong

And those were the greatest days of all it was there when mama sang a song

I guess the house is still standing I don’t get to go back there anymore

Least much no voice is left to fill those halls

And I bet there ain’t even no steps to grace the floor

But I’ll always believe that this world is a better place to live

Tu sais que je repense beaucoup de fois à l'époque où j'étais un garçon

L'ancienne maison où j'ai grandi des jours bons et mauvais

Mes salopettes étaient d'occasion, mes chaussures étaient pleines de trous

J'avais l'habitude de marcher quatre milles pour aller à l'école tous les jours sous la pluie, le grésil et

le froid

J'ai vu les nuits où mon père pleurait

Pour les choses dont sa famille aurait besoin

Mais tout ce qu'il a jamais eu, c'est une ferme de badland et sept bouches affamées à nourrir

Et pourtant et pourtant notre foyer n'a jamais vacillé une seule fois

Parce que quand toutes ces choses ont mal tourné

Maman a pris le livre de cantiques et maman a chanté une chanson

Oh, j'ai été secoué pour m'endormir plusieurs nuits sur l'air de What a Friend

Et viendra le matin Rock of Ages pourquoi ça me réveillerait doucement une fois de plus

Et puis papa, il tendait la main et il enlevait la Bible

Et il l'avait lu, lu fort et longtemps

Et j'ai toujours pensé que peut-être notre maison était bénie

Quand papa dirait que maman chante une chanson

Laisse voir ma sœur quittait la maison en premier, je suppose

Et il y avait Bob, puis Tommy et enfin Dan

À ce moment-là, les cheveux de papa devenaient blancs et je devais être le petit homme de ma maman

Mais il semblait que lorsque le dos de papa s'est affaibli

La foi de ma mère est devenue tellement forte

Et c'étaient les plus beaux jours de tout c'était là quand maman chantait une chanson

Je suppose que la maison est toujours debout, je ne peux plus y retourner

Au moins il ne reste plus de voix pour remplir ces couloirs

Et je parie qu'il n'y a même pas de marches pour honorer le sol

Parce que tu vois ma maman chante au paradis maintenant autour du trône d'or de Dieu

Mais je croirai toujours que ce monde est un meilleur endroit où vivre

Parce qu'une fois ma maman a chanté une chanson
