I was born a catholic and

Raised to be a sceptic

As far as the teaching’s concerned

I knew there was something

I’d always be searching

Through trial and error I learned

That noone will love me

And noone will save me

If I don’t love and I don’t save myself

And nothing from outside

Will bring me to glory

Not all the world’s books on my shelf

But if I could be the Pope

I’d show you the way

All regrets and fears I’d pray away

If I could be the Pope

I’d need no dope

For I’d be providing the best stuff called hope

If I could be the Pope, I would elope

All the virgins loosing their faith

I would sure ditch the rope

For I’d be the Pope

And that would be something with which I could cope

For I’d sure be that Pope.

I was christened unconscious

And grew up so anxious

To see where this whole tale could lead

I learned all commandments and thought I was going to

Be whole no problems indeed

But I found out that all this was highly unlikely to

Leave me forever in peace

And I’d still have the fears and regrets and I would be

always missing a piece.

But if I could be the Pope

I’d show you the way

For I’d be providing the best stuff called hope

If I could be the Pope, I would elope

I’ve been tormented by reason

And accused of treason

When my wonderings questioned beliefs

I lived by the rules and was fed with old news

Like a tree without foliage and leaves.

But after a while I grew my own crown

And I knew I would have to get hold of my soul

And I knew that the clues are all given I’d just have to

Find them inside on my own.

But if I could be the Pope…

I would refine

All that is human and all that’s devine

I’d reconcile time-space and business and crime

And grave jokes to laugh about death

J'ai été baptisé inconscient

Et grandi si anxieux

Pour voir où toute cette histoire pourrait mener

J'ai appris tous les commandements et j'ai pensé que j'allais

Soyez sans problèmes en effet

Mais j'ai découvert qu'il était très peu probable que tout cela

Laisse-moi pour toujours en paix

Et j'aurais encore des peurs et des regrets et je serais

J'ai été tourmenté par la raison

Et accusé de trahison

Quand mes interrogations ont remis en question les croyances

J'ai vécu selon les règles et j'ai été nourri de vieilles nouvelles

Comme un arbre sans feuillage ni feuilles.

Mais après un certain temps, j'ai fait pousser ma propre couronne

Et je savais que je devrais m'emparer de mon âme

Et je savais que les indices sont tous donnés, je n'aurais qu'à

Trouvez-les moi-même à l'intérieur.

Mais si je pouvais être le pape…
