Her telephone rang 'bout a quarter to nine

She heard his voice on the other end of the line

She wondered what was wrong this time

She never knew what his calls might bring

With a cowboy like him it could be anything

And she always expected the worst in the back of her mind.

He said, «I'm sorry it’s come down to this.

There’s so much about you that I’m gonna miss.

He left that phone danglin' off the hook

Then slowly turned around and gave it one last look

Then he just walked away

He aimed his truck toward that Wyoming line

With a little luck he could still get there in time

And in that Cheyenne wind he could still hear her say.

Au moment où vous arriverez ici, je serai parti depuis longtemps.

Il y a quelqu'un de nouveau et ce n'est certainement pas un homme de rodéo. »

Il a dit : « Je suis désolé que cela en soit arrivé là.

Il y a tellement de choses sur toi qui vont me manquer.

Mais ça va bébé, si je me dépêche, je peux toujours faire Cheyenne.

Je dois y aller maintenant bébé, si je me dépêche, je peux encore faire Cheyenne.

Il a laissé ce téléphone pendre du crochet

Puis se retourna lentement et lui lança un dernier regard

Puis il s'est juste éloigné

Il a dirigé son camion vers cette ligne du Wyoming

Avec un peu de chance, il pourrait encore y arriver à temps

Et dans ce vent de Cheyenne, il pouvait encore l'entendre dire.
