For the islander

The coastline stretches in a thin smile

And the water is cold

So green against the granite

But you’re floating out

Your feathers white upon the water

Swim back to me now

Come back to the places that you know

And warm yourself awhile

Sunlight pools upon the channel

And the furrows are bare

So black against the clouds

But you’re diving down

Between the lines and sinkers

Swim back to me now

Climb the winding path up to the road

That leads you into town, and into the square

To gaze upon the stones that they laid there

And feel the iron heel pressed into your back —

Back to haunt the places that you know

And feel the sun awhile

Then back to the cold

Dive in off the rocks below the road

Pour l'insulaire

Et l'eau est froide

Si vert contre le granit

Mais tu flottes

Tes plumes blanches sur l'eau

Reviens vers moi maintenant

Revenez dans les endroits que vous connaissez

Et réchauffe toi un peu

Pour l'insulaire

Bassins de lumière du soleil sur le canal

Et les sillons sont nus

Si noir contre les nuages

Mais tu plonges

Entre les lignes et les plombs

Reviens vers moi maintenant

Montez le chemin sinueux jusqu'à la route

Qui vous mène en ville, et sur la place

Pour contempler les pierres qu'ils y ont posées

Et sens le talon de fer pressé contre ton dos -

Retourner hanter les endroits que vous connaissez

Et sentir le soleil un moment

Puis retour au froid

Plongez dans les rochers sous la route
