Walkin' in Auckland - Jim White, Mark Kozelek, Ben Boye

Some hotel, Auckland, room 1028

Got in late last night, Ben and I went to some Turkish place

And around 2 o clock in the morning, we ordered pizza to go

And some bottled wine, the guys said it was the best sparkling water in the

world

I said, «Really?

How’s that?»

He said «At the bottom of the bottle is a [?}»

I said, «Well then friend, consider it sold.»

The music was so pulsating and loud, I couldn’t think

I walked to the bathroom and there was vomit in the sinks

And tissues with blood and plastic cups all over the floor

And when I came back to meet Ben

Young people were gathered around tables and smokin' hookahs

Or dancing on the dance floor

And in that moment, I felt so old

A girl near the bar was by herself gyrating

While the people there smoking were yelling at each other across the tables

aggressively communicating

Ben and I just sat there in a daze waiting for our pizzas just yawning and

gazing

I got back to my room and ate my entire pizza and didn’t fall asleep until

maybe 4 o clock in the morning

I was up emailing

Woke up at 7:30 and went down to the lobby

The girl in the breakfast room could sense my weariness and she went and

politely got me a banana and an orange and a yogurt and green tea

I didn’t feel like sitting down in the breakfast area

There were too many people and it was so noisy and cluttery

I told her thank you and I started walking to my room to eat my breakfast in

privacy

I had my slippers on, my hands were full, I was feeling so out of it

I was walking back to the elevator when the front desk guy got in my face

Started giving me shit about spilling water all over the place

I said, «What water?

Show me where its wet on the floor?»

He said, «There is water everywhere, let me have one of my staff members bring

your things up to you.

Please sir, you are spilling water all over the place.»

I said, «In your disgruntled dreams maybe but okay.»

«And hurry it up because I want to get back to sleep soon, fuckface.»

I went back to sleep and I woke up at noon

I needed to find a new computer bad and a disposable camera too

I went down to the lobby and asked a doorman for directions

When Ben suddenly appeared beside me

And at that point I stopped asking the doorman questions

Ben said that he had some of his own shopping to do

He needed a thumb-drive and a swimming suit

Because he’s going to spend some time in Christchurch or Churchchrist,

or whatever its called

With his girlfriend, when the tour is over

So we got to walking and we did our shopping together

We started out at some mall and then ended up at a place called Bear House

And I gotta say I went nuts in there

I bought some socks and some jockey type shirt that’s not even my style

And some new underwear

And some new sweatpants

For the gym which I’m too tired to even go to

And yeah, I got a new computer bag too

Its just so exciting to see things priced for 4 dollars

How can you not go nuts?

I wonder if everybody goes nuts in those places

Everything’s priced at 4 dollars

During our shopping I took maybe 5 to 7 photos of Auckland payphones for the

payphone book I’ve been working on

I might have a whole section dedicated to New Zealand payphones

And we went and got some sushi and it tasted great

The miso soup, the unsweetened green tea

We were discussing what we knew about New Zealand and didn’t come up with much

Other than Neil Finn, Anna Paquin, Flight of the Conchords, Once Were Warriors

And some other thing on TV, a series maybe?

A show that was filmed here?

One of those epic fantasy series maybe

I can’t think of the name of it

And then we went on our separate ways so I could get more payphone shots

I was sweating like crazy so I sat down on a bench and realized that I was lost

When a little sparrow flew over to say hi to me

I took his photo, a lot of them, actually

That sparrow was on an ego trip

He was striking all kind of poses, completely in love with himself

It was the Bradley Cooper of sparrows

When I found my way back to the hotel

I was so tired I only shadowboxed one three minute round

With two bottles of 750 millilitre New Zealand spring water, called «Pump»

And I organized my receipts from the Australian part of the tour

And two shows left tonight in Auckland

And tomorrow in Wellington

It was nice getting out today and walking

Everyone in Auckland seemed so alive out there walking

And the sun was shining

Its been so nice walking today in Auckland

I look forward to singing tonight and talking

I emailed Neil Finn to see if he wanted to join us on stage like he did last

time

He said I’m so sorry Mark, I’d love to join you but I’m on tour with Fleetwood

Je suis arrivé tard hier soir, Ben et moi sommes allés dans un endroit turc

Et vers 2h du matin, on a commandé une pizza à emporter

Et du vin en bouteille, les gars ont dit que c'était la meilleure eau pétillante du

monde

J'ai dit : " Vraiment ?

Comment ça ? »

Il a dit "Au fond de la bouteille est un [?}"

J'ai dit : "Eh bien, mon ami, considérez-le comme vendu."

La musique était si palpitante et forte, je ne pouvais pas penser

J'ai marché jusqu'à la salle de bain et il y avait du vomi dans les lavabos

Et des mouchoirs avec du sang et des gobelets en plastique partout sur le sol

Et quand je suis revenu pour rencontrer Ben

Les jeunes étaient réunis autour de tables et fumaient des narguilés

Ou danser sur la piste de danse

Et à ce moment-là, je me sentais si vieux

Une fille près du bar tournait seule

Pendant que les gens qui fumaient se criaient dessus à travers les tables

communiquer agressivement

Ben et moi nous sommes juste assis là, dans un état second, attendant nos pizzas en bâillant et

regarder

Je suis retourné dans ma chambre et j'ai mangé toute ma pizza et je ne me suis pas endormi jusqu'à ce que

peut-être 4 heures du matin

J'étais en train d'envoyer un e-mail

Je me suis réveillé à 7h30 et je suis descendu dans le hall

La fille dans la salle du petit-déjeuner a pu sentir ma fatigue et elle est allée

m'a poliment offert une banane et une orange et un yaourt et du thé vert

Je n'avais pas envie de m'asseoir dans la salle de petit-déjeuner

Il y avait trop de monde et c'était tellement bruyant et encombré

Je lui ai dit merci et j'ai commencé à marcher vers ma chambre pour prendre mon petit-déjeuner dans

intimité

J'avais mes pantoufles, j'avais les mains pleines, je me sentais tellement hors de moi

Je revenais à l'ascenseur lorsque le type de la réception m'a mis en face

J'ai commencé à me faire des conneries à propos de renverser de l'eau partout

J'ai dit : "Quelle eau ?

Montrez-moi où il est mouillé ? »

Il a dit : "Il y a de l'eau partout, laissez-moi demander à l'un des membres de mon personnel d'apporter

vos affaires à vous.

S'il vous plaît monsieur, vous renversez de l'eau partout.»

J'ai dit : "Dans vos rêves mécontents peut-être, mais d'accord."

"Et dépêche-toi parce que je veux de me rendormir bientôt, connard."

Je me suis rendormi et je me suis réveillé à midi

J'avais besoin de trouver un nouvel ordinateur défectueux et un appareil photo jetable aussi

Je suis descendu dans le hall et j'ai demandé mon chemin à un portier

Quand Ben est soudainement apparu à côté de moi

Et à ce moment-là, j'ai arrêté de poser des questions au portier

Ben a dit qu'il avait ses propres courses à faire

Il avait besoin d'une clé USB et d'un maillot de bain

Parce qu'il va passer du temps à Christchurch ou Churchchrist,

ou quel que soit son nom

Avec sa petite amie, quand la tournée est terminée

Alors on s'est mis à marcher et on a fait nos courses ensemble

Nous avons commencé dans un centre commercial, puis nous nous sommes retrouvés dans un endroit appelé Bear House

Et je dois dire que je suis devenu fou là-dedans

J'ai acheté des chaussettes et une chemise de type jockey qui n'est même pas mon style

Et quelques nouveaux sous-vêtements

Et quelques nouveaux pantalons de survêtement

Pour la salle de gym où je suis trop fatigué pour même aller

Et oui, j'ai aussi un nouveau sac d'ordinateur

C'est tellement excitant de voir des choses au prix de 4 dollars

Comment ne pas devenir fou ?

Je me demande si tout le monde devient fou dans ces endroits

Tout est au prix de 4 dollars

Pendant nos achats, j'ai pris peut-être 5 à 7 photos de téléphones publics d'Auckland pour le

livre de téléphone public sur lequel j'ai travaillé

J'ai peut-être une section entière dédiée aux téléphones publics néo-zélandais

Et nous sommes allés chercher des sushis et c'était bon

La soupe miso, le thé vert non sucré

Nous discutions de ce que nous savions sur la Nouvelle-Zélande et n'avons pas trouvé grand-chose

Autre que Neil Finn, Anna Paquin, Flight of the Conchords, Once Were Warriors

Et quelque chose d'autre à la télé, une série peut-être ?

Une émission qui a été tournée ici ?

Une de ces séries fantastiques épiques peut-être

Je ne peux pas penser au nom de celui-ci

Et puis nous nous sommes séparés pour que je puisse obtenir plus de photos de téléphones publics

Je transpirais comme un fou alors je me suis assis sur un banc et j'ai réalisé que j'étais perdu

Quand un petit moineau s'est envolé pour me dire bonjour

J'ai pris sa photo, beaucoup d'entre eux, en fait

Ce moineau était en voyage d'ego

Il prenait toutes sortes de poses, complètement amoureux de lui-même

C'était le Bradley Cooper des moineaux

Quand j'ai retrouvé mon chemin vers l'hôtel

J'étais tellement fatigué que je n'ai fait qu'un shadowbox de trois minutes

Avec deux bouteilles d'eau de source néo-zélandaise de 750 millilitres, appelées "Pump"

Et j'ai organisé mes recettes de la partie australienne de la tournée

Et il reste deux spectacles ce soir à Auckland

Et demain à Wellington

C'était agréable de sortir aujourd'hui et de marcher

Tout le monde à Auckland semblait si vivant là-bas en marchant

Et le soleil brillait

Ça a été si agréable de marcher aujourd'hui à Auckland

J'ai hâte de chanter ce soir et de parler

À Auckland

J'ai envoyé un e-mail à Neil Finn pour savoir s'il voulait nous rejoindre sur scène comme il l'a fait la dernière fois
