The Blizzard - John Denver

Colorado, Colorado

When the world leaves you shivering

And the blizzard blows

When the snow flies and the night falls

There’s a light in the window and a place called home

At the end of the storm

One night on the mountain I was headed for Estes

When the roads turned to ice and it started to snow

Put on the chains in a whirl of white powder

Half way up to Berthoud near a diner I know

And the light burned inside, shining down through the snowfall

God it was cold and the temperature droppin'

Went in for coffee and shivered as I drank it

Warm in my hands in the steam as it rose

Sitting there at the counter was a dark headed stranger

Me and the owner and him keepin warm

Nodded hello and I said it’s a cold one

Looks like there might be a blizzard tonight —

And «yes», said the owner,"

There’s a big storm on the mountain

Good thing we’re open, we could be here for hours

There’s nothing for miles and it’s too late to get to Denver

Better not try for the summit tonight"

And the snow fell

And the night passed

And I talked to the strangers

While the blizzard blew

Me and the stranger, you know I don’t talk to strangers

I’m a private sort of person but a blizzard is a blizzard

And somehow I found myself saying you’d left me

Tellin' him everything I wanted to say to you

You know how it is when you can talk to a stranger

Someone your quite sure you’ll never see again —

Soon we were laughin', and talkin', and drinkin'

He said «you must know you’re too good for him»

And the snow fell

And the night passed

And I talked to the stranger

While the blizzard blew

The stranger said «Love it can cry you a river —

Me, I’m a loner cause I can’t take the heartache

And sometimes I’m a fighter when I get too much whiskey —

Here have a little whiskey, pretend you don’t give a damn —

My cabin’s up here on the side of the mountain

You can go up there and sleep through the blizzard"

I put on my parka, said goodbye to the owner

Followed the stranger through the snow up the mountainside

Woke in the morning to the sun on the snow

My car was buried in six feet of snow drifts

They dug me out, just the owner and the stranger

Sent me on my way when the snowplow had been by

And the roads were all clear and the sun on the mountains

Sparkled like diamonds on the peak to peak highway —

Then I knew that I would get over you, knew you could leave me

But you’d never break me

Une nuit sur la montagne, je me dirigeais vers Estes

Quand les routes se sont transformées en glace et qu'il a commencé à neiger

Mettez les chaînes dans un tourbillon de poudre blanche

A mi-chemin de Berthoud près d'un restaurant que je connais

Et la lumière brûlait à l'intérieur, brillant à travers les chutes de neige

Dieu qu'il faisait froid et la température chute

Je suis allé prendre un café et j'ai frissonné en le buvant

Chaud dans mes mains dans la vapeur alors qu'elle montait

Assis là au comptoir se trouvait un étranger à la tête sombre

Moi et le propriétaire et lui restons au chaud

J'ai hoché la tête bonjour et j'ai dit qu'il faisait froid

Il semble qu'il y ait un blizzard ce soir -

Et "oui", a dit le propriétaire, "

Il y a une grosse tempête sur la montagne

Heureusement que nous sommes ouverts, nous pourrions rester ici pendant des heures

Il n'y a rien à des kilomètres et il est trop tard pour se rendre à Denver

Mieux vaut ne pas essayer d'atteindre le sommet ce soir"

Et la neige est tombée

Et la nuit est passée

Et j'ai parlé aux étrangers

Pendant que le blizzard soufflait

Moi et l'étranger, tu sais que je ne parle pas aux étrangers

Je suis une personne privée, mais un blizzard est un blizzard

Et d'une manière ou d'une autre, je me suis retrouvé à dire que tu m'avais quitté

Lui disant tout ce que je voulais te dire

Vous savez comment c'est quand vous pouvez parler à un étranger

Quelqu'un que vous êtes sûr de ne plus jamais revoir —

Bientôt, nous riions, parlions et buvions

Il a dit "tu dois savoir que tu es trop bien pour lui"

Et la neige est tombée

Et la nuit est passée

Et j'ai parlé à l'étranger

Pendant que le blizzard soufflait

L'inconnu a dit "Je l'aime peut te pleurer une rivière -

Moi, je suis un solitaire parce que je ne peux pas supporter le chagrin d'amour

Et parfois je suis un combattant quand je bois trop de whisky -

Prends un peu de whisky, fais comme si tu t'en fichais -

Ma cabane est ici sur le flanc de la montagne

Tu peux monter là-haut et dormir pendant le blizzard"

J'ai mis ma parka, j'ai dit au revoir au propriétaire

J'ai suivi l'étranger à travers la neige à flanc de montagne

Je me suis réveillé le matin avec le soleil sur la neige

Ma voiture a été ensevelie sous six pieds de congères

Ils m'ont déterré, juste le propriétaire et l'étranger

M'a envoyé sur mon chemin quand le chasse-neige était passé

Et les routes étaient toutes dégagées et le soleil sur les montagnes

Étincelant comme des diamants sur l'autoroute de sommet en sommet —

Alors j'ai su que j'allais m'en remettre, j'ai su que tu pouvais me quitter

Mais tu ne me briserais jamais
