There was a farm on yonder hill, up where the wind it blows-o

There lived a mother and her son and their bonnie old brown cow-o

This cow was a bonnie cow but they needed money most-o

So she said, «Please take the cow, to market you must go-o.»

So he’s walked along the way, he’s walked but half the day-o

And there he’s spied a fair young maid, she says, «where are you bound-o?»

I’ll take this cow along the way Then I will, sell her On market day

«You see this bonnie cow of mine?

I’m taking her to market-o

Then I’ll return to my mother dear with money in my hand-o."

So she’s took this young man’s arm, she says, «You handsome sir-o

Come sit you down in the soft green grass, come rest awhile with me-o

«She's kissed him long, she’s kissed him strong, a fair game she did play-o

And after playing not so hard, this young man he gave way-o

I’ll take this cow along the way Then I will, sell her On market day

When this young man he awoke both girl and cow were gone-o

Gone also were the shoes he wore and the trousers he had on-o

Come all you young men near and far, never heed a maiden’s calling

Never trust a girl with your mother’s cow, never let your trousers go

Il y avait une ferme là-bas sur la colline, là-haut où le vent souffle-o

Là vivaient une mère et son fils et leur bonnie vieille vache brune

Cette vache était une bonne vache mais ils avaient surtout besoin d'argent-o

Alors elle a dit : "S'il vous plaît, prenez la vache, pour le marché, vous devez y aller."

Alors il a marché le long du chemin, il a marché mais la moitié de la journée-o

Et là, il a aperçu une belle jeune fille, elle dit, "où es-tu lié-o ?"

J'emmènerai cette vache en chemin, puis je la vendrai le jour du marché

« Tu vois ma belle vache ?

Je l'emmène au market-o

Ensuite, je retournerai auprès de ma chère mère avec de l'argent dans ma main."

Alors elle a pris le bras de ce jeune homme, elle dit : "Vous beau monsieur-o

Viens t'asseoir dans l'herbe douce et verte, viens te reposer un moment avec moi-o

"Elle l'a embrassé longtemps, elle l'a embrassé fort, un jeu équitable qu'elle a joué-o

Et après avoir joué pas si fort, ce jeune homme a abandonné-o

J'emmènerai cette vache en chemin, puis je la vendrai le jour du marché

Quand ce jeune homme s'est réveillé, la fille et la vache étaient parties

Fini aussi les chaussures qu'il portait et le pantalon qu'il portait-o

Venez tous, jeunes hommes proches et lointains, ne tenez jamais compte de l'appel d'une jeune fille

Ne fais jamais confiance à une fille avec la vache de ta mère, ne lâche jamais ton pantalon
