I was sitting in my kitchen, thinking about my life

How some men end up all alone, some men take a wife

How old men get discouraged and young men go astray

And for every sinful thing we do somehow we will pay

I got up to get my Bible, some pages fell onto the floor

It’s an old one that my father had, and his father before

It’s been with me since my childhood, I was saved in '52

When I look back at my troubled life I give thanks I made it through

I am free, I can see, and I’m who I want to be

Why does it take so long

To learn to stand and be strong?

I grew up in San Francisco in a real rough neighborhood

Where they’d beat you bad if you were tough and worse if you were good

But I came through those times with a lot of love

For those boys who knocked me down

And I pray someday I’ll see them, and we’ll be standing on sacred ground

I am free, I can see, and I’m who I want to be

J'étais assis dans ma cuisine, pensant à ma vie

Comment certains hommes finissent seuls, certains hommes prennent une femme

Comment les hommes âgés se découragent et les jeunes hommes s'égarent

Et pour chaque péché que nous faisons d'une manière ou d'une autre, nous paierons

Je me suis levé pour récupérer ma Bible, certaines pages sont tombées par terre

C'est un ancien que mon père avait, et son père avant

C'est avec moi depuis mon enfance, j'ai été sauvé en 52

Quand je repense à ma vie troublée, je remercie d'avoir survécu

Je suis libre, je peux voir et je suis qui je veux être

Pourquoi cela prend-il si longtemps ?

Apprendre à se tenir debout et à être fort ?

J'ai grandi à San Francisco dans un vrai quartier difficile

Où ils vous battraient durement si vous étiez dur et pire si vous étiez bon

Mais j'ai traversé ces moments avec beaucoup d'amour

Pour ces garçons qui m'ont renversé

Et je prie un jour pour les voir, et nous nous tiendrons sur une terre sacrée
