The End of the World - Laurie Anderson

Ooooaaaah!

Ooooaaaah!

Hi.

This evening I’ll be reading from a book I just finished

and since a lot of it is about the future,

I’m going to start more or less on the last page,

and tell you about my grandmother.

Now, she was a Southern Baptist Holy Ruler

and she had a very clear idea about the future,

and of how the world would end.

— In fire.

In fire.

— Like in Revelations.

Like in Revelations.

And when I was ten my grandmother told me the world would end in a year.

So I spent the whole year praying and reading the Bible

and alienating all my friends and relatives.

And finally the big day came.

And absolutely nothing happened.

Just another day.

Ooooaaaah!

Now my grandmother was a missionary

and she had heard that the largest religion in the world

was Buddhism.

So she decided to go to Japan to convert Buddhists.

— And to inform them about the end of the world.

And to inform them about the end of the world.

And she didn’t speak Japanese.

So she tried to convert them with a combination of hand gestures,

sign language and hymns,

in English.

Ooooaaaah!

The Japanese had absolutely no idea what she was trying to get at.

And when she got back to the United States

she was still talking about the end of the world.

And I remember the day she died.

She was very excited.

She was like a small bird

perched on the edge of her bed

near the window in the hospital.

Waiting to die.

And she was wearing these pink nightgowns

and combing her hair so she’d look pretty

for the big moment when Christ came to get her.

Ooooaaaah!

And she wasn’t afraid

but then, just at the very last minute

something happened that changed everything.

Because suddenly, at the very last minute

she panicked.

After a whole life of praying and predicting the end of the world,

she panicked.

And she panicked because she couldn’t decide

whether or not … to wear … a hat.

Ooooaaaah!

And so when she died

she went into the future

in a panic

with absolutely no idea

of what would be next.

Ce soir, je vais lire un livre que je viens de terminer

et puisqu'il est en grande partie question de l'avenir,

Je vais commencer plus ou moins par la dernière page,

et vous parler de ma grand-mère.

Maintenant, elle était une Sainte Règle Baptiste du Sud

et elle avait une idée très claire de l'avenir,

et comment le monde finirait.

- En feu.

En feu.

— Comme dans Révélations.

Et quand j'avais 10 ans, ma grand-mère m'a dit que la fin du monde se terminerait dans un an.

J'ai donc passé toute l'année à prier et à lire la Bible

et aliénant tous mes amis et parents.

Et enfin le grand jour arriva.

Et il ne s'est absolument rien passé.

Juste un autre jour.

Oooooaaah !

Maintenant ma grand-mère était missionnaire

et elle avait entendu dire que la plus grande religion du monde

était le bouddhisme.

Elle a donc décidé d'aller au Japon pour convertir les bouddhistes.

— Et pour les informer de la fin du monde.

Et pour les informer de la fin du monde.

Et elle ne parlait pas japonais.

Elle a donc essayé de les convertir avec une combinaison de gestes de la main,

langue des signes et chants,

en anglais.

Oooooaaah !

Les Japonais n'avaient absolument aucune idée de ce qu'elle essayait d'atteindre.

Et quand elle est revenue aux États-Unis

elle parlait toujours de la fin du monde.

Et je me souviens du jour de sa mort.

Elle était très excitée.

Elle était comme un petit oiseau

perché sur le bord de son lit

près de la fenêtre de l'hôpital.

En attendant de mourir.

Et elle portait ces chemises de nuit roses

et peignant ses cheveux pour qu'elle soit jolie

pour le grand moment où le Christ est venu la chercher.

Oooooaaah !

Et elle n'avait pas peur

mais ensuite, juste à la toute dernière minute

il s'est passé quelque chose qui a tout changé.

Parce que tout à coup, à la toute dernière minute

elle a paniqué.

Après toute une vie à prier et à prédire la fin du monde,

elle a paniqué.

Et elle a paniqué parce qu'elle ne pouvait pas décider

si oui ou non… de porter… un chapeau.

Oooooaaah !

Et donc quand elle est morte

elle est allée dans le futur

en panique

sans aucune idée

de ce qui serait la prochaine.
