It’s strangely pleasant sitting in the church this evening

The more I like it when there’s no one else around

Last rays of sunlight fading through the stain glass window

The flickering shadows looming as large as twilight nears

There’s lots of hungry creatures prowling around the streets tonight

Sacristians edgy hear him rattling with the keys

Nothing must disturb the sleeping of the statues

I’m so glad I still have you for sanctuary

Just like Francis of Assisi

You’re so kind to the animal in me

When you come home talking hard chaw

Like you been down drinking with the butcher boys

I called around to see aunt Margaret this morning

She had to have Alsation Arthur put away

The dog attacked a youngster on the side walk

Now she’s up all night until the break of day

Me I’m getting restless in the afternoons

I need to find a job, but what can I do

Suppose I’ll wander out my summer days

I just don’t know where I’d find the likes of you

There’s lots of laughing couples wandering round the streets tonight

Lights on the river make her like a gypsy queen

But empty buildings jagged on the skyline

Keep bringing me back to that same old scene

Just like Francis of Assisi

You’re so kind to the animal in me

But now you’re standing at the bedroom door

Smelling of whiskey and the abattoir

And with a regal wave

Of your calloused hand

You’re saying 'All this is yours

If this hand you choose'

C'est étrangement agréable d'être assis à l'église ce soir

Plus j'aime ça quand il n'y a personne d'autre autour

Les derniers rayons de soleil passent à travers le vitrail

Les ombres scintillantes se profilent aussi grandes que le crépuscule approche

Il y a beaucoup de créatures affamées qui rôdent dans les rues ce soir

Les sacristains énervés l'entendent cliqueter avec les clés

Rien ne doit troubler le sommeil des statues

Je suis tellement content de t'avoir encore pour sanctuaire

Tu es si gentille avec l'animal en moi

Quand tu rentres à la maison en parlant dur

Comme si tu étais en train de boire avec les bouchers

J'ai appelé pour voir tante Margaret ce matin

Elle a dû faire ranger Alsation Arthur

Le chien a attaqué un jeune sur le trottoir

Maintenant, elle est debout toute la nuit jusqu'à l'aube

Moi je m'agite l'après-midi

J'ai besoin de trouver un emploi, mais que puis-je faire ?

Supposons que je vais errer mes jours d'été

Je ne sais pas où je trouverais des gens comme toi

Il y a beaucoup de couples qui rient qui errent dans les rues ce soir

Les lumières sur la rivière la font ressembler à une reine gitane

Mais des bâtiments vides déchiquetés à l'horizon

Continuez à me ramener à cette même vieille scène
