Dancing Song - Mr. Fox

I learnt to dance when I was a boy

And dancing was my only joy

I’ll still be dancing when you grow old

When the seas dry up and walls take fold

My father taught me how to dance

He said it was my only chance

To show the people how to be free —

An ordinary boy like me!

When the day came to go to school

The teacher took me for a fool

You should’ve heard the bugles roar

As I danced through the classroom door

But I didn’t cry, I didn’t fret

I told them stuff their alphabet

I packed my bags that very same night

And I took off in the morning light

I heard a commodore blow his horn

And saw I knew they’d been forewarned

Twisting and to stir the wheat

The grass sprang up beneath my feet

I knew the dance would help to show

The trees and flowers how to grow

So knowing I must never tire

I gave a yell that there took fire

One day I took it in me mind

The time had come for me to bind

So with me true love fair and wild

I hailed a toe right up the aisle

The people cheered, the thrushes drank

For miles around the church bells rang

The pub was closed and we were wed

So lost stop to our marriage bed

In time came children, one two three

They all looked like their mother and me

And through the hall and up the stairs

And up to bed to say their prayers

But they still lost that prize on Earth

They soon forgot those steps they learnt

My wife grew old, I knew the day

Had come for me to dance away

Over the mountains over the sea

Nothing on Earth could hold back me

So let me give you a word of warning

If you walk out on a bright spring morning:

Around the corner of the next street

You hear the sound of my dancing feet

Keep away, try not to hear

Whatever you do, don’t come too near

The dance may take you as it took me —

From lovers and friends and family

J'ai appris à danser quand j'étais petit

Et danser était ma seule joie

Je danserai encore quand tu seras vieux

Quand les mers s'assèchent et que les murs se plient

Mon père m'a appris à danser

Il a dit que c'était ma seule chance

Pour montrer aux gens comment être libre —

Un garçon ordinaire comme moi !

Quand est venu le jour d'aller à l'école

Le prof m'a pris pour un imbécile

Tu aurais dû entendre les clairons rugir

Alors que je dansais à travers la porte de la classe

Mais je n'ai pas pleuré, je ne me suis pas inquiété

Je leur ai dit de bourrer leur alphabet

J'ai fait mes valises le même soir

Et je suis parti dans la lumière du matin

J'ai entendu un commodore sonner dans son klaxon

Et vu que je savais qu'ils avaient été prévenus

Tordant et remuant le blé

L'herbe a poussé sous mes pieds

Je savais que la danse aiderait à montrer

Les arbres et les fleurs comment pousser

Alors sachant que je ne dois jamais me lasser

J'ai crié qu'il y avait eu du feu

Un jour, je l'ai pris en tête

Le temps était venu pour moi de lier

Alors avec moi le véritable amour juste et sauvage

J'ai salué un orteil dans l'allée

Les gens ont applaudi, les grives ont bu

A des kilomètres à la ronde les cloches de l'église ont sonné

Le pub était fermé et nous nous sommes mariés

Alors arrêt perdu pour notre lit conjugal

Avec le temps sont venus les enfants, un deux trois

Ils ressemblaient tous à leur mère et moi

Et à travers le couloir et monter les escaliers

Et jusqu'au lit pour dire leurs prières

Mais ils ont quand même perdu ce prix sur Terre

Ils ont vite oublié ces étapes qu'ils ont apprises

Ma femme a vieilli, j'ai connu le jour

Était venu pour moi pour danser loin

Au-dessus des montagnes au-dessus de la mer

Rien sur Terre ne pourrait me retenir

Alors laissez-moi vous donner un mot d'avertissement

Si vous sortez par un beau matin de printemps :

Au coin de la rue voisine

Tu entends le son de mes pieds qui dansent

Tenez-vous à l'écart, essayez de ne pas entendre

Quoi que vous fassiez, ne vous approchez pas trop

La danse peut vous prendre comme elle m'a pris -
