I loved a lad, I loved him so well

I hated all others who spoke of him ill.

And maybe in time I’ll forget him.

Les hommes de la vieille ville m'ont demandé,

"Combien de fraises poussent dans la mer salée ?"

Et je leur ai répondu la larme à l'œil,

« Combien de navires sombres naviguent dans la forêt ?

Creusez-moi une tombe, creusez-la si profondément,

Couvrez-le de fleurs si douces.

Je m'allonge pour dormir longtemps

Et peut-être qu'avec le temps je l'oublierai.
