Talkin' Candy Bar Blues - Peter, Paul and Mary

Bought a candy bar the other day,

only ate half, s’gonna throw the rest away

when I saw this kid playin' in the street,

I said «;Hey kid, you want somethin' to eat?»;

he said «;Whut?»;

I said «;Candy, son.»;

He said «;HELP!»;

Then he started to run,

and I stood there,

watchin' him go,

half a bar of chocolate

runnin' down my fingers.

Well the kid comes back in a minute or two

but his mom’s with him and the neighbors too,

and they got the kid scared it’s plain to see,

they say «;Which one done it?»;

he points at me.

He says «;Him»;.

I say «;What do you mean?»;

He says «;YOU!»;

then he starts to scream,

and I’m standin', everybody’s lookin',

everybody’s starin' -at me- … (nervous laugh)

«;Howdy doody… y'all waitin' for the bus?

Ah … a little late isn’t it … anybody got a watch?

…

we could uh see how late it is …

I got a better idea, let’s find somebody with a watch

and stare at him!»;

Well some start pickin' up baseball bats

and the others are pullin' the pins from their hats —

«;I think this thing’s gone a little too far,

hell, I only offered him a CANDY BAR!»;

I said «;WAIT!»;

I said «;What are you doin'?»;

They said «;PRE-VERT the kid’s life is ruined!»;

«;Oh…oh well then you better check what he’s chewin'

cause I got the feelin'

he’s in the middle of a bubble gum orgy!»;

Well they’re comin' at me and I’m backin' away

and then I hear this policeman say

«;Are you positive he’s the right man?»;

(I quick flicked the candy bar out of my hand).

J'ai acheté une barre chocolatée l'autre jour,

n'en a mangé que la moitié, je vais jeter le reste

quand j'ai vu ce gamin jouer dans la rue,

J'ai dit " Hé gamin, tu veux quelque chose à manger ?" ;

il a dit " Quoi ? » ;

J'ai dit " Candy, fiston." ;

Il a dit " AIDE !" ;

Puis il s'est mis à courir,

et je suis resté là,

le regarder partir,

une demi-tablette de chocolat

coule sur mes doigts.

Eh bien, l'enfant revient dans une minute ou deux

mais sa mère est avec lui et les voisins aussi,

et ils ont effrayé l'enfant, c'est évident,

ils disent «;Qui a fait ça?»;

il me montre du doigt.

Il dit ";Lui" ;.

Je dis ";Qu'est-ce que tu veux dire ?" ;

Il dit " ; VOUS !" ;

puis il se met à crier,

et je suis debout, tout le monde regarde,

tout le monde me regarde -moi- … (rire nerveux)

«;Howdy doody… vous attendez tous le bus?

Ah... un peu tard n'est-ce pas... quelqu'un a une montre ?

…

on pourrait euh voir à quel point il est tard...

J'ai une meilleure idée, trouvons quelqu'un avec une montre

et regarde-le !" ;

Eh bien, certains commencent à ramasser des battes de baseball

et les autres tirent les épingles de leurs chapeaux -

« Je pense que cette chose est allée un peu trop loin,

diable, je ne lui ai offert qu'un CANDY BAR !" ;

J'ai dit " ATTENDEZ !" ;

J'ai dit " Qu'est-ce que tu fais ?" ;

Ils ont dit «;PRE-VERT la vie du gosse est ruinée ! » ;

«; Oh… oh bien alors tu ferais mieux de vérifier ce qu'il mâche

parce que j'ai le sentiment

il est au milieu d'une orgie de chewing-gum !" ;

Eh bien, ils viennent vers moi et je recule

puis j'entends ce policier dire

« Êtes-vous sûr que c'est la bonne personne ? » ;

(J'ai rapidement enlevé la barre chocolatée de ma main).
