In my memory I will always see

the town that I have loved so well

Where our school played ball by the gasyard wall

and we laughed through the smoke and smell

Going home in the rain, running up the dark lane

past the jail and down behind the fountain

Those were happy days in so many, many ways

in the town I loved so well

There was music there in the Derry air

like a language that we all could understand

I remember the day when I earned my first pay

When I played in a small pick-up band

There I spent my youth and to tell you the truth

I was sad to leave it all behind me

For I learned about life and I’d found a wife

in the town I loved so well

But when I returned how my eyes have burned

to see how a town could be brought to its knees

By the armoured cars and the bombed out bars

and the gas that hangs on to every tree

Now the army’s installed by that old gasyard wall

and the damned barbed wire gets higher and higher

With their tanks and their guns, oh my God, what have they done

to the town I loved so well

Now the music’s gone but they carry on

For their spirit’s been bruised, never broken

They will not forget but their hearts are set

on tomorrow and peace once again

For what’s done is done and what’s won is won

and what’s lost is lost and gone forever

I can only pray for a bright and brand new day

in the town I loved so well

Où notre école jouait au ballon près du mur de la cour à gaz

et nous avons ri à travers la fumée et l'odeur

Rentrer à la maison sous la pluie, courir dans la ruelle sombre

passé la prison et derrière la fontaine

Ce furent des jours heureux à bien des égards

dans la ville que j'aimais si bien

Il y avait de la musique là-bas dans l'air de Derry

comme une langue que nous pourrions tous comprendre

Je me souviens du jour où j'ai gagné ma première paie

Quand je jouais dans un petit groupe de pick-up

Là j'ai passé ma jeunesse et pour te dire la vérité

J'étais triste de tout laisser derrière moi

Car j'ai appris la vie et j'ai trouvé une femme

dans la ville que j'aimais si bien

Mais quand je suis revenu, mes yeux ont brûlé

voir comment une ville pourrait être mise à genoux

Par les voitures blindées et les bars bombardés

et le gaz qui s'accroche à chaque arbre

Maintenant, l'armée est installée près de ce vieux mur de gazier

et les maudits barbelés deviennent de plus en plus hauts

Avec leurs chars et leurs fusils, oh mon Dieu, qu'ont-ils fait ?

dans la ville que j'aimais si bien

Maintenant la musique est partie mais ils continuent

Car leur esprit a été meurtri, jamais brisé

Ils n'oublieront pas mais leurs cœurs sont fixés

demain et la paix à nouveau

Car ce qui est fait est fait et ce qui est gagné est gagné

et ce qui est perdu est perdu et parti pour toujours

Je ne peux que prier pour un jour lumineux et tout neuf

dans la ville que j'aimais si bien
