I was a P.F.C.

on search patrol, huntin' Charlie down

It was the jungle wars of '65

My weapon jammed and I got stuck way out all alone

I could hear the enemy moving in close outside

Just then I heard a twig snap and I grabbed my empty gun

And I dug in scared while I counted down my fate

And then a big marine, with a pair of friendly eyes

Appeared there at my shoulder and said «Wait.»

Charlie wants to tango, now he’ll have two to dance"

I said, «Well, thanks!»

I told him my name and asked him his

And he said «The boys just call me Camouflage»

I was awfully glad to see this big Marine

Well, we fought all night, side by side, took our battle stance

And I wondered how the bullets missed this man

Cause they seemed to go right through him just as if he wasn’t there

And in the mornin' we both took a chance and ran

And it was near the riverbank when the ambush came

And I thought this was the end, and we were had

Then a bullet with my name on it came buzzin' through a bush

And then the big Marine, he just swat it with his hand

Just like it was a fly…

I was awfully glad to see this big marine

When he led me outta danger I saw my camp and waved goodbye

He just winked at me from the jungle then was gone

When I got back to my H.Q., I told 'em about my night

And the battle I’d spent with a big Marine named Camouflage

When I said his name, a soldier gulped, and a medic took my arm

And led me to a green tent on the right

He said «You may be telling the truth, boy, but this here is Camouflage

And he’s been right here since he passed away last night

But before he went, he said Semper Fi, and said his only wish

Was to save a young Marine caught in a barrage»

«So here, take his dog tag, son, I know he’d want you to have it now»

en patrouille de recherche, traquant Charlie

C'était les guerres de la jungle de 65

Mon arme s'est coincée et je suis resté coincé tout seul

Je pouvais entendre l'ennemi se déplacer à près de l'extérieur

Juste à ce moment-là, j'ai entendu un craquement de brindille et j'ai attrapé mon arme vide

Et j'ai creusé effrayé pendant que je comptais mon destin

Et puis un grand marin, avec une paire d'yeux amicaux

Il est apparu là à mon épaule et a dit "Attendez".

Charlie veut tango, maintenant il va avoir deux pour danser "

J'ai dit : "Eh bien, merci !"

Je lui ai dit mon nom et lui ai demandé son

Et il a dit "Les garçons m'appellent juste Camouflage"

J'étais terriblement content de voir ce grand Marine

Eh bien, nous nous sommes battus toute la nuit, côte à côte, avons pris notre position de combat

Et je me suis demandé comment les balles avaient manqué cet homme

Parce qu'ils semblaient le traverser comme s'il n'était pas là

Et le matin, nous avons tous les deux tenté notre chance et avons couru

Et c'était près de la berge quand l'embuscade est venue

Et je pensais que c'était la fin, et nous étions eus

Puis une balle avec mon nom dessus est venue bourdonner à travers un buisson

Et puis le gros Marine, il juste l'écraser avec sa main

Comme si c'était une mouche...

Quand il m'a sorti du danger, j'ai vu mon camp et j'ai dit au revoir

Il m'a juste fait un clin d'œil depuis la jungle puis est parti

Quand je suis revenu à mon QG, je leur ai parlé de ma nuit

Et la bataille que j'avais passée avec un grand Marine nommé Camouflage

Quand j'ai dit son nom, un soldat a dégluti et un médecin m'a pris le bras

Et m'a conduit à une tente verte sur la droite

Il a dit "Tu dis peut-être la vérité, mon garçon, mais ici c'est du camouflage

Et il est ici depuis qu'il est décédé la nuit dernière

Mais avant de partir, il a dit Semper Fi et a dit son seul souhait

Était de sauver un jeune Marine pris dans un barrage »

"Alors voilà, prends sa plaque d'identité, fils, je sais qu'il voudrait que tu l'aies maintenant"
