Santa Claus Does Not Forget

Bertie was a very good boy.

He was kind, obedient, truthful and unselfish.

He had, however, one great fault — he always forgot.

No matter how important the errand, his answer was always, «I forgot.»

When he was sent with a note to the dressmaker, his mother would

find the note in his pocket at night.

If he was sent to the store in a great hurry, to get something for tea,

he would return late, without the article, but with his usual answer.

His father and mother talked the matter over, and decided that something must

be done to make the little boy remember.

Christmas was near, and Bertie was busy making out a list of things,

which Santa Claus was to bring him.

«Santa Claus may forget some of those things,» said his mother.

He cannot," replied Bertie, «for I shall write sled, and skates, and drum,

and violin, and all the things on this paper.

Then when Santa Claus goes to my stocking he will find the list.

He can see it and put the things in as fast as he reads.»

Christmas morning came, and Bertie was up at dawn to see what was in his

stocking.

His mother kept away from him as long as she could, for she knew what Santa

Claus had done.

Finally she heard him coming with slow steps to her room.

Slowly he opened the door and came towards her.

He held in his hand a list very much longer than the one he had made out.

He put it in his mother’s hand, while tears of disappointment fell from his

eyes.

See what Santa Claus left for me;

but I think he might have given me one thing

besides."

His mother opened the roll.

It was a list of all the errands Bertie had been asked to do for six months.

At the end of all was written in staring capitals, «I FORGOT.»

Bertie wept for an hour.

Then his mother told him they were all going to grandpa’s.

For the first time he would see a Christmas tree.

Perhaps something might be growing there for him.

It was very strange to Bertie, but on grandpa’s tree he found everything he had

written on his list.

Was he cured of his bad habit?

Not all at once;

but when his mother saw that he was particularly heedless she

would say, «Remember, Santa Claus does not forget.»

Bertie était un très bon garçon.

Il était gentil, obéissant, sincère et désintéressé.

Il avait cependant un grand défaut : il oubliait toujours.

Peu importe l'importance de la course, sa réponse était toujours : « J'ai oublié ».

Lorsqu'il était envoyé avec une note à la couturière, sa mère voulait

trouver la note dans sa poche la nuit.

S'il a été envoyé au magasin en toute hâte, pour obtenir quelque chose pour le thé,

il reviendrait tard, sans l'article, mais avec sa réponse habituelle.

Son père et sa mère en parlèrent et décidèrent que quelque chose devait

être fait pour que le petit garçon se souvienne.

Noël approchait, et Bertie était occupée à dresser une liste de choses,

que le Père Noël devait lui apporter.

"Le Père Noël peut oublier certaines de ces choses", a déclaré sa mère.

Il ne peut pas, répondit Bertie, car j'écrirai traîneau, patins et tambour,

et violon, et toutes les choses sur ce papier.

Ensuite, lorsque le Père Noël ira à mon bas de Noël, il trouvera la liste.

Il peut le voir et mettre les choses aussi vite qu'il lit. »

Le matin de Noël arriva, et Bertie se leva à l'aube pour voir ce qu'il y avait dans son

stockage.

Sa mère s'est tenue à l'écart de lui aussi longtemps qu'elle a pu, car elle savait ce que le Père Noël

Claus avait fait.

Enfin, elle l'entendit venir à pas lents dans sa chambre.

Lentement, il ouvrit la porte et vint vers elle.

Il tenait à la main une liste bien plus longue que celle qu'il avait dressée.

Il le mit dans la main de sa mère, tandis que des larmes de déception coulaient de son

yeux.

Voyez ce que le Père Noël m'a laissé;

mais je pense qu'il m'a peut-être donné une chose

outre."

Sa mère a ouvert le rouleau.

C'était une liste de toutes les courses qu'on avait demandé à Bertie de faire pendant six mois.

À la fin de tout était écrit en majuscules, "J'AI OUBLIÉ".

Bertie a pleuré pendant une heure.

Puis sa mère lui a dit qu'ils allaient tous chez grand-père.

Pour la première fois, il verrait un sapin de Noël.

Peut-être que quelque chose y pousse pour lui.

C'était très étrange pour Bertie, mais sur l'arbre de grand-père, il a trouvé tout ce qu'il avait

écrit sur sa liste.

A-t-il été guéri de sa mauvaise habitude ?

Pas tout à la fois;

mais quand sa mère vit qu'il était particulièrement insouciant, elle

dirait: «Souviens-toi, le Père Noël n'oublie pas.»
