I couldn’t have been more than seven years old

Mumma had a boyfriend that left me cold

He used to tease me being a boy

And say «I'm the man go play with your toys»

I used to hear them make love the morning

It would scare me so much I’D take it as a warning

Then my Mumma come and look at me

And say «How's my boy doing without me?»

The thief went swimming in the lake at night

And all I could see was his torch light

Mummas heart I knew that he would break

He knew how to bake his own bread

He grew a lot of dope in the back shed

He knew how to make Mumma cry

He knew how to tell her perfect lie

I remember the day he drove home in our car

With a bullet hole straight through the door

He pointed at the hole with his broken hands

And said «You're lucky boy that you ain’t no man»

Looking back on my eighth birthday

I watched my MummaMumma walk away

With a broken rib only half awake

I remember the wish as I blew out the cake

Taught me a gift that I still own
