The Possum - Sun Kil Moon

Yesterday, I was working in my yard when I saw a possum

Swinging in the foothills and he was all beat up and hobbling

I got a closer look and his foot was mangled

I was woken up earlier by what I thought was the cat tangled

But it was him who got it bad from the cat that night

Slowly down the hill when he slipped under the fence

I brought myself up to check him out;

he found a nook under the air conditioner

I pointed him out to Caroline, she crouched down and he was shaking and full of

fear

And when she stood up, I asked, «Baby, why you crying?»

She said, «Because he’s cute and he’s down there and he’s dying»

I went up to my room and I got a call from Justin

He was in San Francisco and Godflesh was playing

Caroline drove me halfway there where I met Tony

And we drove to the city and we parked out in front of the DNA

Justin and us, we had some laughs and we took photographs backstage

And our guts were protruding and all of them and we just kept laughing and

laughing

and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing

Laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and

laughing

Laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and

laughing

Laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and

laughing

And when Godflesh took the stage, Tony and I, we stood there floored

Drum machines hammered and feedback blazed

For a moment, everybody grew silent

While Justin tuned his guitar;

like a church, it got so quiet

Just for a minute, and then they all soared together

Like a car off a cliff, we crashed and burned over and over and again and again

They threw hard vicious guttural B-flats that shook their opponent

Like a tough Roberto «Hands of Stone"Durán in the seventh round

Godflesh ran that line like an early Mark «Gator» Rogowski

Justin lunged at the mic like a hungry great white

He was on fire, giving it everything he had and killing it that night!

Tearing out his prey and it came to a screeching halt

A relentless and beautiful voice, a 70 minute assault

And then he bowed down and he set his seven string electric guitar down

And screeched to holy hell and they disappeared and off went the crowd

Then we had pizza and I came back to my apartment in the city

Until 4AM, I watched movies and my ears were ringing

And I called Caroline out at the house

We talked about the concert, about the possum down in the nook

And the ocean air came through my window

And the sound of foghorns, and then when I woke

Godflesh was down in LA

Tony had an open house that day

And I looked out at Sausalito

And Caroline was on her way back from Lake Tahoe

I got a call from Paolo Sorrentino

I’d be off to Switzerland in a week or so

Caroline came home that night and we had dinner and watched HBO

And I’m grateful for her love and for my friends

And to have seen the possum walk its last walk among the ivy

I want to grow old and to walk the last walk

Knowing that I, too, gave it everything I got

But again it’s all roadblocks and all obstacles I fought

For to live another day is much better than to not

And I’d like to die with music in my ears

The piano of Maurice Ravel or Godflesh’s guttural growls from hell

The sound that evokes good memories of being young and able to get around

And I’d like Caroline beside me

That old possum lost the fight

His sad, black eyes;

what a thing to see on a glowing Easter Sunday

But that rodent was loved and he’s still thought of

Church bells rang that day

I remember hearing them in the afternoon just as we left

He had to have heard them too

J'ai regardé de plus près et son pied a été mutilé

J'ai été réveillé plus tôt par ce que je pensais être le chat emmêlé

Je l'ai indiqué à Caroline, elle s'est accroupie et il tremblait et plein de

la crainte

Et quand elle s'est levée, j'ai demandé : "Bébé, pourquoi tu pleures ?"

Elle a dit: "Parce qu'il est mignon et qu'il est là-bas et qu'il est en train de mourir"

Je suis monté dans ma chambre et j'ai reçu un appel de Justin

Il était à San Francisco et Godflesh jouait

Caroline m'a conduit à mi-chemin là où j'ai rencontré Tony

Et nous avons conduit jusqu'en ville et nous nous sommes garés devant l'ADN

Justin et nous, on a rigolé et on a pris des photos dans les coulisses

Et nos tripes saillaient et tous et nous avons juste continué à rire et

en riant

et rire et rire et rire et rire et rire

Rire et rire et rire et rire et rire et rire et

en riant

Rire et rire et rire et rire et rire et rire et

en riant

Rire et rire et rire et rire et rire et rire et

en riant

Et quand Godflesh est monté sur scène, Tony et moi, nous sommes restés là par terre

Des boîtes à rythmes martelées et des retours flamboyants

Pendant un moment, tout le monde s'est tu

Pendant que Justin accordait sa guitare;

comme une église, c'est devenu si calme

Juste une minute, puis ils ont tous plané ensemble

Comme une voiture d'une falaise, nous nous sommes écrasés et brûlés encore et encore et encore et encore

Ils ont lancé des si bémols gutturaux durs et vicieux qui ont secoué leur adversaire

Godflesh a couru cette ligne comme un premier Mark "Gator" Rogowski

Justin s'est jeté sur le micro comme un grand blanc affamé

Il était en feu, lui donnant tout ce qu'il avait et le tuant cette nuit-là !

Déchirant sa proie et elle s'est arrêtée brutalement

Une voix implacable et magnifique, un assaut de 70 minutes

Et puis il s'est incliné et il a posé sa guitare électrique à sept cordes

Et crié au saint enfer et ils ont disparu et la foule est partie

Ensuite, nous avons mangé une pizza et je suis revenu dans mon appartement en ville

Jusqu'à 4h du matin, j'ai regardé des films et mes oreilles bourdonnaient

Et j'ai appelé Caroline à la maison

Nous avons parlé du concert, de l'opossum dans le coin

Et l'air de l'océan est venu par ma fenêtre

Et le son des cornes de brume, et puis quand je me suis réveillé

Godflesh était à LA

Tony avait une journée portes ouvertes ce jour-là

Et j'ai regardé Sausalito

Et Caroline revenait du lac Tahoe

J'ai reçu un appel de Paolo Sorrentino

Je serais parti pour la Suisse dans une semaine environ

Caroline est rentrée ce soir-là, nous avons dîné et regardé HBO

Et je suis reconnaissant pour son amour et pour mes amis

Et d'avoir vu l'opossum faire sa dernière promenade parmi le lierre

Je veux vieillir et faire le dernier pas

Sachant que moi aussi, j'ai tout donné

Mais encore une fois, ce sont tous les barrages routiers et tous les obstacles que j'ai combattus

Car vivre un autre jour vaut bien mieux que ne pas

Et j'aimerais mourir avec de la musique dans mes oreilles

Le piano de Maurice Ravel ou les grognements gutturaux d'enfer de Godflesh

Le son qui évoque de bons souvenirs d'être jeune et capable de se déplacer

Et j'aimerais Caroline à mes côtés

Ce vieil opossum a perdu le combat

Ses yeux tristes et noirs;

qu'est-ce qu'il y a de voir un dimanche de Pâques radieux ?

Mais ce rongeur était aimé et on pense encore à lui

Les cloches de l'église ont sonné ce jour-là

Je me souviens les avoir entendus dans l'après-midi juste au moment où nous sommes partis
