in every folk tale, in every book,

there is a hero or a heroine

and there is a witch or a troll or a crook

or an evil stepmother or just a general villain

and i remember reading when i was young

and i always felt sorry for the bad ones and the tricksters

i never identified with the little lost kids

but maybe that’s ‘cause i didn’t have brothers or sisters

and so when the witch died i cried

‘cause i didn’t want them to hurt her —

likewise when the troll got tricked and when the dragon got killed

and i hated the part when the wolf got ax-murdered,

and the moral of the story always left me unfulfilled

and i was not a sociopath,

i was a six-year-old

who could tell the difference between good and bad

a little boy with built in ethics who didn’t need to be told

that it was wrong to be mean to your mom or to lie to your dad

but i knew if i had to choose sides

i’d probably pick the empire;

i hated ewoks and i loved the death star.

and i never felt sorry for the last unicorn

i always thought that song needed a lot more guitar

and i did not grow up to be a serial killer,

though there are a few people on my list

and whenever i see a child reading a book about a boy-wizard

i find myself grinding my teeth and clenching my fists

and i want to say ‘hey kid here’s a bedtime story for you:

the wicked witch wins and the orphans lose.

they did everything right and now they’re orphan fondue

and the moral of the story is you don’t always get to choose

dans chaque conte folklorique, dans chaque livre,

il y a un héros ou une héroïne

et il y a une sorcière ou un troll ou un escroc

ou une mauvaise belle-mère ou juste un méchant général

et je me souviens avoir lu quand j'étais jeune

Et je me suis toujours senti désolé pour les méchants et les escrocs

Je ne me suis jamais identifié aux petits enfants perdus

mais c'est peut-être parce que je n'avais pas de frères ou de sœurs

et alors quand la sorcière est morte, j'ai pleuré

parce que je ne voulais pas qu'ils lui fassent du mal —

de même quand le troll s'est fait avoir et quand le dragon s'est fait tuer

et j'ai détesté la partie où le loup a été assassiné à la hache,

et la morale de l'histoire m'a toujours laissé insatisfait

et je n'étais pas sociopathe,

j'avais six ans

qui pourrait faire la différence entre le bien et le mal

un petit garçon avec une éthique intégrée qui n'avait pas besoin qu'on lui dise

que c'était mal d'être méchant avec ta mère ou de mentir à ton père

mais je savais si je devais choisir mon camp

je choisirais probablement l'empire ;

Je détestais les ewoks et j'adorais l'étoile de la mort.

et je ne me suis jamais senti désolé pour la dernière licorne

j'ai toujours pensé que cette chanson avait besoin de beaucoup plus de guitare

et je n'ai pas grandi pour devenir un tueur en série,

bien qu'il y ait quelques personnes sur ma liste

et chaque fois que je vois un enfant lire un livre sur un garçon-sorcier

je me retrouve à grincer des dents et à serrer les poings

et je veux dire "hé petit, voici une histoire pour toi :
