I stopped to see the great fir tree that stood within the square

I watched it’s sparkling lights shine through the cold and snowy air

Then some movement caught my eye below it’s branches green

I wondered what could be there beneath the Christmas tree

Then I saw a little boy with tangled, golden curls

And blue eyes dancing full of life

Though life had been so cruel

He said, «Tonight's the night Santa comes

I hope he comes to me

And sees me just as you did beneath the Christmas tree

Silent night, oh holy night

How clearly, Lord, I see

But for Thy Grace it could be me

There beneath the Christmas tree

Somewhere bells were ringing as I slipped off my coat

Wrapped it 'round his shoulders and held his body close

On the night that Christ was born there’s no way I could leave

This cold and hungry orphan boy beneath the Christmas tree

Silent night, oh holy night

I took him home with me

But for Thy Grace, it could be me

There beneath the Christmas tree

J'ai regardé ses lumières scintillantes briller dans l'air froid et neigeux

Puis un mouvement a attiré mon attention sous ses branches vertes

Je me suis demandé ce qu'il pouvait y avoir sous le sapin de Noël

Puis j'ai vu un petit garçon avec des boucles dorées emmêlées

Et des yeux bleus dansant pleins de vie

Bien que la vie ait été si cruelle

Il a dit : "Ce soir, c'est le soir où le Père Noël arrive

J'espère qu'il viendra vers moi

Et me voit comme tu l'as fait sous le sapin de Noël

Nuit silencieuse, oh nuit sacrée

Comme je vois clairement, Seigneur,

Mais pour Ta Grâce, ça pourrait être moi

Là sous le sapin de Noël

Quelque part, des cloches sonnaient alors que j'enlevais mon manteau

Enroulé autour de ses épaules et tenu son corps près

La nuit où le Christ est né, il n'y a aucun moyen que je puisse partir

Cet orphelin froid et affamé sous le sapin de Noël
