In an old city bar

That is never too far

From the places that gather

The dreams that have been

In the safety of night

With its old neon light

It beckons to strangers

And they always come in

And the snow it was falling

The neon was calling

The music was low

And the night

Christmas Eve

And here was the danger

That even with strangers

Inside of this night

It’s easier to believe

Then the door opened wide

And a child came inside

That no one in the bar

Had seen there before

And he asked did we know

That outside in the snow

That someone was lost

Standing outside our door

Then the bartender gazed

Through the smoke and the haze

Through the window and ice

To a corner streetlight

Where standing alone

By a broken pay phone

Was a girl the child said

Could no longer get home

And the snow it was falling

The neon was calling

The bartender turned

And said, not that I care

But how would you know this?

The child said I’ve noticed

If one could be home

They’d be all ready there

Then the bartender came out from behind the bar

And in all of his life he was never that far

And he did something else that he thought no one saw

When he took all the cash from the register draw

Then he followed the child to the girl cross the street

And we watched from the bar as they started to speak

Then he called for a cab and he said J.F.K.

Put the girl in the cab and the cab drove away

And we saw in his hand

That the cash was all gone

From the light that she had wished upon

If you want to arrange it

This world you can change it

If we could somehow make this

Christmas thing last

By helping a neighbor

Or even a stranger

And to know who needs help

You need only just ask

Then he looked for the child

But the child wasn’t there

Just the wind and the snow

Waltzing dreams through the air

So he walked back inside

Somehow different I think

For the rest of the night

No one paid for a drink

And the cynics will say

That some neighborhood kid

Wandered in on some bums

In the world where they hid

But they weren’t there

So they couldn’t see

HE SAW IT ALL SO CLEAR

Dans la sécurité de la nuit

Il fait semblant aux étrangers

Et ils viennent toujours

La musique était faible

Et la nuit

réveillon de Noël

Et voici le danger

Que même avec des inconnus

À l'intérieur de cette nuit

C'est plus facile de croire

Puis la porte s'ouvrit toute grande

Et un enfant est entré

Que personne dans le bar

Avait déjà vu là-bas

Et il a demandé si nous savions

Que dehors dans la neige

Que quelqu'un était perdu

Debout devant notre porte

Alors le barman regarda

A travers la fumée et la brume

Par la fenêtre et la glace

Vers un lampadaire d'angle

Où debout seul

Par un téléphone public en panne

Était une fille, l'enfant a dit

Impossible de rentrer à la maison

Et la neige tombait

Le néon appelait

Le barman s'est retourné

Et dit, pas que je m'en soucie

Mais comment le sauriez-vous ?

L'enfant a dit que j'avais remarqué

Si quelqu'un pouvait être à la maison

Ils seraient tous prêts là-bas

Puis le barman est sorti de derrière le bar

Et dans toute sa vie, il n'a jamais été aussi loin

Et il a fait autre chose qu'il pensait que personne n'avait vu

Quand il a pris tout l'argent du tirage au sort

Puis il a suivi l'enfant jusqu'à la fille qui a traversé la rue

Et nous les avons regardés depuis le bar alors qu'ils commençaient à parler

Puis il a appelé un taxi et il a dit que J.F.K.

Mettez la fille dans le taxi et le taxi est parti

Et nous avons vu dans sa main

Que l'argent était parti

De la lumière qu'elle avait souhaité

Si vous voulez l'organiser

Ce monde tu peux le changer

Si nous pouvions en quelque sorte faire cela

Dernier truc de Noël

En aidant un voisin

Ou même un étranger

Et savoir qui a besoin d'aide

Valser des rêves dans les airs

Alors il est rentré à l'intérieur

Quelque peu différent, je pense

Pour le reste de la nuit

Personne n'a payé une boisson

Et les cyniques diront

Ce gamin du quartier

J'ai erré sur des clochards

Dans le monde où ils se sont cachés

Mais ils n'étaient pas là

Ils ne pouvaient donc pas voir

Par une vieille étoile au néon

Cette nuit-là, la veille de Noël

Quand la neige tombait

Le néon appelait

Et au cas où vous vous demanderiez

Au cas où vous devriez vous en soucier

Pourquoi nous sommes seuls ?

Je ne suis jamais rentré à la maison

Cette nuit de toutes les nuits

Nous y étions déjà
