Golden Bird - Levon Helm

Walking along on a path in the mountains

I saw a bird flying way up high

Gold were its wings in the sun of the morning

Flashing at me as it flew through the sky

It’s beauty was such, and I felt I must have it

She stood all day, nearly into the night

Finally angered that I couldn’t catch it

Determined that I would stop it in flight

I found a stone by a mountain stream flowing

Rounded and smoothed by the water’s fast flow

It felt so warm and alive in my hand

It was an arrow, my arm was a bow

Then a flashing of wings, and a cry pierced the air

It fluttered and it fell on the rocks at my feet

Weeping I left it, the thing that had fallen

Blood stained my hands and tears wet my cheek

Later that night as I lay in my bed

I heard the sound of wings in the air

The room became bathed in a warm, golden glow

I opened my eyes and a woman stood there

Did not you know when you hurt me so cruelly

I was your love, I was your friend

You couldn’t stand it that I was so free

Now you will never see me again

Marcher le long d'un chemin dans les montagnes

J'ai vu un oiseau voler très haut

L'or était ses ailes au soleil du matin

Clignotant vers moi alors qu'il volait dans le ciel

Sa beauté était telle, et je sentais que je devais l'avoir

Elle est restée debout toute la journée, presque dans la nuit

Enfin en colère de ne pas pouvoir l'attraper

Déterminé à l'arrêter en vol

J'ai trouvé une pierre près d'un ruisseau de montagne qui coule

Arrondi et lissé par le débit rapide de l'eau

C'était si chaud et vivant dans ma main

C'était une flèche, mon bras était un arc

Puis un battement d'ailes, et un cri perça l'air

Il a voleté et est tombé sur les rochers à mes pieds

En pleurant je l'ai laissé, la chose qui était tombée

Le sang a taché mes mains et les larmes mouillent ma joue

Plus tard dans la nuit alors que j'étais allongé dans mon lit

J'ai entendu le bruit des ailes dans l'air

La pièce est devenue baignée d'une lueur chaude et dorée

J'ai ouvert les yeux et une femme se tenait là

Ne savais-tu pas quand tu m'as blessé si cruellement

J'étais ton amour, j'étais ton ami
