Ellen and Ben

They met at someone’s house warming party

They didn’t like each other at first

I was still there

I heard them talking as they found their rain coats

They made a date expecting the worst

When Ellen got home

She made a snack

And went up on her rooftop

And didn’t think about Ben at all

She stayed up for hours

Just watching all the drunk folks find their taxis

'Cause all in all it was a good night…

SoCo in bed

A sunny Sunday watching John McLaughlin

And having sex again and again

I had stopped by

'Cause Ellen had my copy of 'Nebraska'

They never even put on their clothes

I hung for a while

But every time I tried to ask them something

They started making out all again

I thought it was rude

I couldn’t tell you why…

They may as well run off to Havana

They simply disappeared for a year

They’d show up at shows

But less and less and saying «Hi» to no one

And why they even came was unclear

They got a new place

But neither of their names were in the phonebook

So no one really knew where they where

I thought it was cheap

But I couldn’t tell you why…

When I was ten

I had this book of modern fighter planes

With F-15s and MiGs

That and a bowl of Breyer’s mint chip was life at its apex

The chewing of pens

The Ocean City girls on the boardwalk singing

Ellen and Ben

I heard they broke up loudly at a wedding

And never saw each other again

It seems kinda weird

They made each other feel like they could die

But they couldn’t stay the slightest of friends

Well I’m doing fine

I’m staying busy hanging with my nephew

And trying to keep my eyes on the prize

You know how it goes

And so do I So call me when you can now

You know how I love a surprise…

Ils se sont rencontrés lors de la pendaison de crémaillère de quelqu'un

Ils ne s'aimaient pas au début

j'étais encore là

Je les ai entendus parler alors qu'ils trouvaient leurs imperméables

Ils ont rendez-vous en s'attendant au pire

Quand Ellen est rentrée à la maison

Elle a fait une collation

Et est montée sur son toit

Et je n'ai pas du tout pensé à Ben

Elle est restée éveillée pendant des heures

Juste regarder tous les gens ivres trouver leurs taxis

Parce que dans l'ensemble, c'était une bonne nuit…

Un dimanche ensoleillé en regardant John McLaughlin

Et faire l'amour encore et encore

je m'étais arrêté

Parce qu'Ellen avait ma copie de 'Nebraska'

Ils ne mettent même jamais leurs vêtements

J'ai accroché pendant un moment

Mais chaque fois que j'essayais de leur demander quelque chose

Ils ont recommencé à s'embrasser

J'ai pensé que c'était grossier

Je ne pourrais pas vous dire pourquoi...

Ils peuvent aussi bien s'enfuir à La Havane

Ils ont tout simplement disparu pendant un an

Ils se présenteraient à des spectacles

Mais de moins en moins et dire "Salut" à personne

Et pourquoi ils sont même venus n'était pas clair

Ils ont un nouvel endroit

Mais aucun de leurs noms ne figurait dans l'annuaire

Donc personne ne savait vraiment où ils étaient

Je pensais que c'était bon marché

Mais je ne pourrais pas vous dire pourquoi...

Quand j'avais dix ans

J'avais ce livre d'avions de chasse modernes

Avec des F-15 et des MiG

Ça et un bol de chips à la menthe de Breyer, c'était la vie à son apogée

La mastication des stylos

Les filles d'Ocean City chantent sur la promenade

Ellen et Ben

J'ai entendu dire qu'ils avaient rompu bruyamment lors d'un mariage

Et ne se sont jamais revus

Cela semble un peu bizarre

Ils se sont fait sentir comme s'ils pouvaient mourir

Mais ils ne pouvaient pas rester le moindre ami

Bon je vais bien

Je reste occupé à traîner avec mon neveu

Et essayer de garder mes yeux sur le prix

Vous savez comment ça se passe

Et moi aussi Alors appelle-moi quand tu peux maintenant

Vous savez à quel point j'aime les surprises...
