The Ugly Little Duck - Stephin Merritt

It was glorious in the country

There were plants

They were yellow and green!

And the stork was speaking egyptian

For egyptian his mummy had been

'neath a burdock tree sat a mother

Sat and sat, that her children would hatch

Which they did, mostly, but one other

The big round one, that just didn’t match

It seemed to take forever

One unhappy day came the duckling

Though his egg had been faithfully warmed

He was so much larger than average

He could best be described as deformed

He was much too gray and too fluffy

As the other ducks loudly opined

When he cried, they said:

«don't get huffy

You can keep on living, we don’t mind

It’s just that you’re so ugly.»

So he left early in the morning

But he found, wherever he would roam

That, despite some changes in the sceenry

Everyone was as vile as at home

As he settled in for the winter

Overhead flew a flock of such birds

That his vision stuck like a spinter

They were all too beautiful for words

That winter was freezing

I can’t tell you how much he suffered!

This descirpiton will have to suffice:

He was paddling round the lake, when

His poor feet were frozen in the ice

When it snowed again, he was buried

Then it snowed some more over his head

There he sat, too cold to be worried

Truth to tell, he just thought he was dead

He didn’t mind that one bit

But the spring was here, and a thaw came

Our half-dead little hero survived!

And the daffodil and the crocus

Sang aloud: «one more spring has arrived!»

And the lovely birds gathered round him

He was nuzzled, and doted upon

Then he knew his family had found him

He’d become the most beautiful swan

«I never dreamed of such amazing luck

When I was just an ugly little duck!»

C'était glorieux dans le pays

Il y avait des plantes

Ils étaient jaunes et verts !

Et la cigogne parlait égyptien

Pour l'égyptien sa maman avait été

'sous un arbre de bardane était assise une mère

Assis et assis, que ses enfants éclosent

Ce qu'ils ont fait, la plupart du temps, mais un autre

Le grand tour, ça ne correspondait tout simplement pas

Cela a semblé prendre une éternité

Un jour malheureux vint le caneton

Bien que son œuf ait été fidèlement réchauffé

Il était tellement plus grand que la moyenne

Il pourrait mieux être décrit comme déformé

Il était beaucoup trop gris et trop pelucheux

Comme les autres canards l'ont dit à haute voix

Quand il a pleuré, ils ont dit :

« ne te fâche pas

Vous pouvez continuer à vivre, cela ne nous dérange pas

C'est juste que tu es si moche. »

Alors il est parti tôt le matin

Mais il a trouvé, partout où il errait

Que, malgré quelques changements dans le paysage

Tout le monde était aussi vil qu'à la maison

Alors qu'il s'installait pour l'hiver

Au-dessus a survolé un troupeau de tels oiseaux

Que sa vision est restée bloquée comme un spinner

Ils étaient tous trop beaux pour les mots

Cet hiver était glacial

Je ne peux pas vous dire à quel point il a souffert !

Cette description devra suffire :

Il pagayait autour du lac, quand

Ses pauvres pieds étaient gelés dans la glace

Quand il a de nouveau neigé, il a été enterré

Puis il a encore neigé sur sa tête

Il était assis là, trop froid pour s'inquiéter

À vrai dire, il pensait juste qu'il était mort

Cela ne le dérangeait pas du tout

Mais le printemps était là, et le dégel est venu

Notre petit héros à moitié mort a survécu !

Et la jonquille et le crocus

A chanté à haute voix: « un printemps de plus est arrivé ! »

Et les beaux oiseaux rassemblés autour de lui

Il était blottie et adorait

Puis il a su que sa famille l'avait trouvé

Il deviendrait le plus beau des cygnes

"Je n'ai jamais rêvé d'une chance aussi incroyable

Quand je n'étais qu'un vilain petit canard !"
